To continue planning for our film opening, we needed to get a clear view of how our scenes are going to look like so we decided to finally settle on a clear location for each of our scenes. In this post me and my team will be looking at possible locations and choosing an appropriate one.
We needed 3 categories of locations:
- A social place (1st scene)
- A field (2nd scene)
- A room (3rd scene)
First scene
For this scene we needed a social place such as a house or a pub that has a kitchen island or a bar. After discussion we settled on 3 possible locations:
1.Lucas House
Advantages
- Firstly, we were already familiar with his house since we shot our preliminary project. Also it was very convenient since we could use our light equipment in the comfort of a familiar place.
- Secondly Lucas kitchen has an island and it would mimic perfectly a club bar. This was extremely convenient since we didn’t need to talk to any bar owners or any venue owners. Additionally we would also be able to stay as much as we would need.
- Thirdly, filming at lucas house would be completely free since we wouldn’t need to order anything or pay to be at this location.
- Additionally, all external variables would be completely controlled such as the amount of people at this location, the lightning, the diegetic sound, the music playing in the background and the mise en scene props.
Disadvantages
- In order to get the party to have a more realistic feel, we would need to invite a lot of people and find led lights to give the scene a more colorful and vivid look.
- There was a big possibility of Luca not being able to make his house available since he lives with his family and his parents wouldn’t be available to just leave.
2.Flying Circus
Advantages
- This would be the preferred location since it is an actual club with preset lights that we would have control over. We would also have a bar, a perfect background (compared to our vision) and we would not need to invite extras since there would already be people there.
- I am a DJ in my spare time and mainly have events in this club. I have a stable and rather good relationship with the owner to the chances of him letting us film there are increased compared to another club.
- Additionally, luca is my associate when it comes to my part time job of dj-ing and he mainly does the lights at my gigs. This would mean that he is already experienced with controlling and managing the lighting in order to get the best possible shots.
Disadvantages
- Firstly and the most obvious disadvantage is that the owner might not agree to let us film in his club.
- Secondly, the people in the background might not consent to be filmed. We would need to either blur their face or find certain angels that would not include them
3.Yolka
Advantages
- Yolka has the perfect layout for this scene, including a kitchen island
- Yolka is also a sister company with flying circus so, by knowing the owner it would be easier to get permission to film
Disadvantages:
- This is a very chill pub with a very calm atmosphere so it would be a bit hard to have create a party vibe.
Final decision:
We decided to film at Yolka due to the simple fact that we could easily change the location to instead of a party to a pub scene and this would also limit the amount of extras we would need. This offers us multiple other advantages such as this location being easily accessible for all of us and it having the perfect layout according to our vision.
Second scene
For this scene we needed a naturalistic, quiet and open space that would best represent a field.
1.Colina park
Advantages
- It was very close to mine and stelas house so i could get there by bus very easily and stela could go by foot
- It offers the natural and wild look that we wanted to get in the second scenario.
- Even if it feels like it is in a secluded part of town, it is still in the city.
- It is ideal for filming because it is often calmer than the other natural spaces in the city centre.
Disadvantages
- There might be kids running around and possibly dog walkers, so it’s not completely private. This would remove the feeling of being in an imaginary and ethereal scenario.
2.Central park
Advantages
- Even with the equipment, it is fairly easy to get to on foot and by public transportation.
- Because there are numerous police vehicles and security personnel nearby, it is extremely safe. We would feel more comfortable taking our equipment there as a result.
- There are plenty of trees and grassy areas where we could film, making it a really naturalistic area.
Disadvantages
- There are a lot of dogwalkers, pedestrians, and families with kids in this park, making it a crowded area. Filming would become extremely challenging since we might unintentionally include people in our shots.
- Due to the streets surrounding the park and the people passing by, the area would also be extremely noisy. It goes without saying that this would lower the quality of our result.
- Additionally, because there are several pathways, benches, and trash cans that aren’t usually present on a field, it doesn’t convey the wild and natural mood that we are trying to achieve.
3.A field near lucas house
Advantages
- This location is the most convenient since it will be remote and it will convey the perfect naturalistic atmosphere.
- Luca’s house is only a fifteen-minute walk away, making it really convenient, and moving our equipment would be effortless.
- It would be less crowded than our other two possibilities because, aside from the surrounding residential areas, there are hardly any people.
Disadvantages
- It would be difficult to overlook the houses and fences that surrounded the fields, especially in the wide and long shots.
- Because the fields were abandoned, the environment was untidy and even dangerous, so we needed to be very careful.
Final decision:
We decided to use the field near Lucas’ house mainly due to the fact that it is extremely remote and there is an extremely low possibility of anyone being on the field. We also chose it due to the fact that it is an actual field instead of a park.
Final scene
For the final scene we had to decide between my room or lucas room but this was a clear decision since it would be where all of our equipment is and my room is very decorated and would kind of ruin the psychological thriller vibe.
