Post 27. Case study- My moon my man(Feist)

The song

For this post, me and my time wanted to make a case study together (which is why it is written exactly the same for all three of us) talking about why we chose to use this song in our film opening, and how it ended up being such a major part of it, due to its impactful nature.

About the artist and the song

Canadian indie pop musician Feist (Leslie Feist) is renowned for her gentle voice and pleasant yet unconventional style. Her 2007 album The Reminder (which combines pop, folk, and indie rock elements) helped her gain her popularity around the world, featuring the song My Moon My Man as one of the album’s best songs.

The hidden meaning of the song

The song is about a complicated romantic relationship where emotions are messy and confusing. Although Feist hasn’t completely explained this concept, the lyrics hint at a situation in which one person feels deeply attached to another while simultaneously being confused by their actions. The main theme of the song is the metaphor of a lover to the moon. The moon is never steady; it keeps shifting and moving through different phases. In similar way, the song’s character seems to be emotionally unstable.. Despite this, the character stays, showing how strong an emotional bond can be even in the face of uncertainty.

The moon is the song’s strongest symbol. The moon is a symbol of emotional distance, cycles, and change.   Feist implies that her partner is unpredictable and difficult to understand by referring to them as “the moon.” They go through phases, just like the moon, which makes the connection seem unstable and fragile.

Being “out of sync” is another key concept in the song. The lyrics’ mention of things being “out of key” or not quite right implies that there may be some emotional differences between the two individuals in the connection. They may have feelings for one another, yet their perspectives on the relationship are different.

The song can be interpreted as being about vulnerability, on a deeper level. Despite not knowing how things will turn out, the narrator remains honest about their emotions. This demonstrates the risk of having feelings for someone unstable and emotionally dangerous. It also implies that since they value the relationship too much to let it go, people occasionally accept emotional instability, even though this may not be the best thing.

Its cultural and emotional relevance

Because it portrays feelings that a lot of people can relate to, “My Moon My Man” continues to have cultural and digital relevance.   The song highlights unpredictability, change, and emotional strain rather than portraying love as flawless or straightforward. Compared to many conventional love songs, it feels more realistic because of this.

Because it can be interpreted differently by different people, the song is especially powerful.   While some can relate to the experience of not fully understanding someone they care about, others might interpret it as a story of chaotic love.

The song stands out as an emotionally powerful song to people  because it doesn’t try to give a solution for this situation. There is no obvious conclusion or solution. The song feels genuine and timeless because of its honesty.

Popularity

The song gained some popularity when it was first released in 2007, especially since it was used in programs like Grey’s Anatomy.

After being featured in Heated Rivalry, the song gained popularity once more years later. The song stands out since almost the whole song is played in one significant scene. The scene, which represented a complicated relationship with intense and chaotic emotions, perfectly complemented the concept of the song. As a result, the song created an emotional connection with a lot of viewers.

It gained particular popularity on the internet, as listeners began to perceive it as the ideal song for passionate, gradual relationships. This introduced Feist’s music to a fresh audience.

Why we chose to use it for our film opening

Firstly, both me and stela just recently watched the show i mentioned earlier, heater rivalry, and had a lot of emotional attachment to the song and the scenes it was played in. However we did not want this to be the only reason we added it to our film opening, therefore we went to search the hidden meaning and any information we could find on the internet about the song’s background.

The main reason we chose it was, when we listened to the lyrics, the story behind the song resembles Ivy and Finn.

Finn is struggling to trust Ivy and no longer has trust in her after he received the message from his friend (preliminary video). However, Ivy did not want this relationship to end or for Finn to leave so she killed him. This put ivy in a horrible mental state with her constantly hallucinating him around, unable to let go of this relationship, just like the song concludes.

After a lot of debate, this song seemed perfect for our film opening and we decided to use it right when the imaginary perfect scenario of them in the field transitions to the flashback of Ivy killing Finn.
