Who am I?
Hi! I’m Emma, a 17-year old student at Transylvania College. I am passionate about arts, photography and mathematics. In my free time I like to play tennis, do pilates, play the piano and read. I am also involved in my school’s robotics team as a Graphic Designer. My personality can be described as athletic, creative, empathetic and honest.
Why did I choose media studies?
I am passionate about the field or arts and photography, so this was an opportunity for me to do something I would like. The future is still pretty blurry for me, and I’m still trying to discover what I’d like to do, but Media Studies may help me gain significant skills for whatever it is I choose. It is also a way to get myself out of my comfort zone, by creating a blog and posting it online, and encouraging me to make a habit of writing my whole process every week.
What I know
I have worked with graphic designing before, which helped strengthen my creativity and visual literacy skills. I read quite a lot, mainly fiction and psychological thrillers, which help expanding my vocabulary and lead to a bigger imagination. Additionally, I enjoy analysing and interpreting information, like trying to guess the plot twists in movies before they are revealed.
What I need to learn
Editing photos to make them very high quality is something that I don’t have much experience with, as I haven’t used specialised apps or websites for this yet. I have a bit of knowledge on how a camera works, but not much experience with using the physical camera. I have taken many photos of our robotics at competitions, but the camera settings were either put on automatic or pre-selected by our actual photographer, so I will need to learn how to operate one properly once I get my own. I need to develop a higher sense of time-management, so that I don’t reach a point where I need to add multiple posts in very little time. Video editing also seems quite complicated, but it is also something I’m willing to learn, including adding sound effects and all the post-production work.
What I want to learn
I want to learn how to use a camera better, and how lenses change the results. I’m also interested in the idea of keeping a blog, which will make me more responsible as I have to update it every week. I’m also curious of how green screens are used and how the background is made to look so natural. And finally I want to learn about camera work, how the wanted effects and atmosphere is achieved, and the behind-the-scenes work of famous movies and photos.
Film or Magazine
My final decision is to create a magazine, and that is because I’m more interested in Graphic Design and have more skills in that area, which I’d further like to improve. Moreover, I’d like to work on my writing skills and this could offer me an advantage. My decision is to work individually on the magazine itself, because I’d like to have a finished product I’ve done myself, and to photograph my friends which will be a fun experience for all of us.
