To better understand my target audience and how they respond to key elements in film especially about the thriller genre I conducted a questionnaire. The aim was to gather statistics on how important people find a film’s opening scene and their general movie preferences while also gathering information about basic demographic information. This information helps shape my decisions, from how I structure the beginning of my film to what kind of atmosphere and storytelling style will resonate most with viewers. Below is a breakdown and analysis of the responses collected.
- How Important Is a Film’s Opening?
I asked the participants to choose how important the opening of a movie is to them personally. These are the results

70.6% of the people who responded agreed that the opening is somewhat important to them but they don’t determine the movie only based on it. 35.3% considered the opening extremely important saying that it sets the tone of the entire film and its the factor that grabs their attention making them give their full attention to what is going to happen further on. I also had no respondents that said that the opening isn’t important to them
What does this mean?
The opening scene continues to be important to the audience which can be even more important to my thriller where tension is built from the beginning. Even though not everybody judges a film on its start, over a third percent do, so making a good and engaging opening is crucial.
- What Is Your Gender?

60% of my audience identify as females
35% identify as male
5% stated that they either prefer not to say or something else
Why this matters
Knowing my audience’s gender breakdown helps me understand how different demographics will respond to my thriller. It could also tell me in character creation or tone of my thriller if I noticed any patterns in how each gender rated the importance of the film opening.
- What Film Genres Do You Usually Watch?

Horror was the most popular genre followed by thriller and comedy. Romance, drama and fantasy were also listed but had less fans in my audience.
What this means
My viewers are already enjoy thrillers and horror so picking this genre aligns with the respondents preferences. Adopting elements that blend tension and mystery might be more intriguing and engage my audience.
4. Viewing frequency

The majority of my respondents watch movies weekly. This suggests that watching films is a regular activity and most people engage in this activity constantly. A smaller group watch movies daily which indicated a more dedicate audience. The information that i gathered can strongly influence my opening.
5. Preferences for film openings

Preferences are quite evenly spread which shows there’s not a single formula that works for everyone. Some prefer action while others want to get to know the characters and some like slow tension building.
How it helps my thriller opening:
This tells me that while I have freedom in how I start it would be best to include elements that appeal across the board for example i can start with a mysterious character but in a way that builds tension slowly while hinting at bigger events to come. Blending these elements could satisfy multiple viewer preferences at once.
