When I crafted the introduction to my movie scene I drew inspiration from the themes found in thrillers, however I made an effort to twist things around in some aspects. I was really questioning how exactly i should approach this film opening as i would usually enjoy a slower built suspense but i think that the approach i settled for is better for this project. The narrative kicks off in a school gym during a game of dodgeball. Soon takes a darker and more psychological turn. By employing thriller tactics such as a head injury leading to a blurred perspective shot followed by moments of silence and creepy sound effects I was able to create an initial feeling of disorientation and unease for the audience. These decisions create suspense. Set the stage for the change, in atmosphere.

The thriller genre achieved its eerie atmosphere through shadowy figures which created tension by displaying unsettling visuals.  The opening scenes use these surface level techniques to explore deeper themes about self-discovery, confidence and  how others perceive us. The main character Ben stands apart from traditional heroes because he is much more introverted than the normal ,,main character” image that most of us would imagine. The audience can see his inner battles through his nonverbal cues before  supernatural occurrences start to happen. However beyond these inducing tactics the initial scenes of the movie evolve into more profound themes surrounding self discovery, alienation from society and the complexities of how we are viewed by others. His struggles were evident, through his gestures and expressions before the strange occurrences commenced.

His friend’s response upon entering the bathroom and finding Ben in a state of panic on the floor. Simply stating “ill leave you do whatever this is” before exiting. Illustrates a tendency for people to downplay or ignore individuals facing mental health struggles. This incident may seem unassuming but it carries the weight of the people that are struggling and are being ignored. Bens experiences depicted with imagery also touch on real life themes such, as the sense of loneliness one endures and the societal taboos surrounding emotional openness in young males. Moreover shows how fear manifests both externally and internally. The movie doesn’t just stick to thriller tropes it approaches the psychological journey of its main character while also adding a deeper social commentary to the genre.
