Storyline and shotlist

avoid unnecessary problems like not getting enough shots or footage that doesn’t piece together well to be able to create my music video without running into unnecessary problems like not getting enough shots or having footage that doesn’t piece well together, I will make a shot list.

Over the last few months, I have spent a long time thinking about exactly how the music video will pan out. I have thought of countless scenarios in my head about how to make it perfect and make sure I think of every scenario before making the music video, so i dont feel like I missed out on a good idea. I have most of the music video already planned out in my head so i think its now a good idea to put it in writing so i dont forget anything. Here is my plan for how the music video will play out and what the narrative is going to look like.

For the beginning of the video im not yet quite sure exactly what I want to do, but I have a couple of ideas and a general theme. As I mentioned in an earlier post, the mv will follow a young man who is struggling to cope after a recent heartbreak (very cliché, I know). He becomes depressed and looks for any way to escape his feelings. Going along with this narrative i thought that the mv should begin dramatically with the young man getting drunk alone. The part I’m not quite sure about yet is what setting he should be in. My first idea was for him to be in a bar and i actually already have a good place in mind that would fit the mv well, but I think it would be quite difficult and awkward to film in a busy bar. On the other hand, I do think I could get some pretty cool shots, as the mise en scène in the bar is very rough around the edges and grungy, which would fit the aesthetic of the mv perfectly. My other idea was to have him drinking alone on an empty, dark street in the city and walking around aimlessly. one reason why i think this idea may benifical for me to do rather than the bar idea is that it would be an isolated scene where nobody can get in the way and i can get as many shots as i need to without worrying about external factors like drunk people in a busy bar ruining my shots. on the other hand compared to the old school, grungy, bar, walking around a dark street seems somewhat boring. This also depends on the actual street and location i choose to film at which i do not yet know but if i find the right location this might be the best option. This scene should last around 15-20 seconds and its pourpose is to introduce the audience to the protagonist and get a general idea about what hes going through and what the mv will be about.

The shot list will be as follows:

  1. The first shot will be an establishing shot showing a wide angle of the dark street that the protagonist will spend the first roughly 20 to 30 seconds of the music video on.
  2. The second shot will be an extreme close up of the protagonist’s face to show what emotions he’s feeling in order to set the mood for the rest of the music video, as the emotions shown will be sad and distraught.
  3. The third shot will be a high angle shot of the protagonist sitting down, showing that he is weak and vulnerable.
  4. The fourth shot will be a medium-wide shot of the protagonist walking down the dark street.
  5. The fourth and final shot will be a point of view shot from the protagonist’s perspective, showing his view of the world.
  6. The fifth and final shot will be a hand-held close-up of the protagonist’s face to again show his current emotions.
