The process of creating our short film was a beautiful journey from the start to an end that significantly developed my creative and collaborative skills. From the initial stages of pre-production and crazy brainstorm to the final edits, I noticed a shift in how I started to approach things differently – transitioning from relying on intuition to using more analytical mindset. This growth not only fueled up my confidence as an actor, writer and a composer but also deepened my understanding of filmmaking as a collective effort! By the end of the project, I definitely had gained the ability to justify my creative choices and of course work effectively with my team—skills that without a doubt will benefit me in the future.
One of the biggest areas of growth was in balancing intuition with structured knowledge. Earlier, I often made choices based solely on what felt right, trusting my intuition without much of an analytical analysis. But as the project progressed, I began integrating our media studies lessons, referencing various techniques and theories, studying other films for inspiration. My passion for the project allowed me to make more balanced decisions, particularly when translating the script into visual. For example, when developing my character in Nemor, I moved beyond surface-level emotions and had some time to think about how framing and symbolism could enhance my appearance. This shift not only improved the quality of my work but also made me a more efficient team member.
Collaboration. Film production is a huge team effort, and our group’s dedication to do 101% of the effort pushed us to grow in ways we hadn’t anticipated. Since this was our first filmmaking project, we were all learning in real time, which meant constant experiments, feedback, failure and trying again. The willingness of my teammates for pointing out the flaws and my openness to receiving it—taught me the value of constructive criticism. Rather than staying “in my box”, I learned to listen, adapt, and sometimes compromise for the sake of the project’s overall vision…which was hard time to time. Some of our best creative solutions appeared from heated discussions and sometimes even trust into one vision or another. This process not only refined the film but also reinforced the importance of communication and mutual respect in team work. Just a quick mention – my team consists of two of my closest friends and I am forever grateful for this opportunity to create together.
Looking back, the effort we poured into this project was huge…but the reward is priceless — WE DID IT! Beyond the technical skills I gained performance techniques, skills from recording my first ever soundtrack and problem-solving under pressure. As I move forward, I carry with me not only the pride of what we accomplished but also the confidence that I can approach future projects with the same level of passion and even more knowledge.
