This consisted of one week of learning about basic setup and equipment, jobs and techniques and one week of helping out on set, filming short sequences with 2 groups of children that had just completed an acting course. Me and my 2 other colleagues took turns doing 1 of 3 jobs; holding the boom, operating the clapperboard (which included taking notes on which takes the director liked and why, and a bit of prop setup) and supervising/adjusting the audio, turning certain microphones’ volumes up and down. I remember spending hours outside in the blazing heat, redoing the same 5 minutes over and over again, in an excruciating cycle that felt like it would never end. After that week, I considered that experience to be one of the worst ones I will probably ever have in my film production career. Little did I know, we had it pretty easy compared to the adventure that was creating the Nemor film opening. The final week we learned how to use DaVinci resolve to edit movies, and were tasked with creating a fun behind-the-scenes reel for a movie they recently produced.

Our first struggle was properly operationalising the plot of the movie. During our brainstorming sessions, we bounced from concept to concept, plot hole to plot hole, and gave up multiple times. I understand that we picked a difficult concept, but it was one we were quite fond of, and we had scenes in mind we really wanted to execute, so while it was a quite frustrating process we ended up with a final product we are quite satisfied with.

After writing the plot and making the script, the rest of research and planning went really smoothly. We had a lot of elements such as location and costume design that we already agreed on as we built the plot for the movie.

More struggles appeared during the filming days, in Dealu Botii. The biggest one being time. The sun sets really early up in the mountains during the month of January, and getting consistent lighting throughout the majority of shots meant we were in a constant rush, with makeup and costumes, with prep and with arriving at the location on time. For next time, I will invest in a handheld light, in order to both visually elevate our film and help create consistent lighting throughout scenes.

Thankfully the weather stayed consistent during the days we were filming, which was a true blessing, but I will admit we were not prepared with a plan on what to do in case it didn’t. This is also something I feel I need to personally work on, as it wasn’t a possibility I considered at all during research and planning, and next time we may not be so lucky.

One minor issue was the cold, as it was truly freezing, and we had little to no time to warm up as we were in a race against the sun. Another minor, and quite funny issue in hindsight, was that between the second and third filming days Masha managed to somehow misplace the deck of tarot cards. She spent almost 1 hour searching for it in the cabin, while me and Mark captured some additional establishing shots of the location and running shots, however we did quickly run out of shots to take, and we spent countless minutes just freezing in the snow and anxiously waiting for Masha, watching the sun get lower and lower helplessly. For next time, I will definitely make sure to keep an eye on all props to avoid such inconveniences.

The visual part of the editing process thankfully went very smoothly, and the whole film opening did not take me very long to build. The hardest part was adding text, as I had some complications with fonts, and transitions, but a few tutorials later it all worked out, and in the grand scheme of things I don’t consider it to have been a massive hurdle.

The audio part of the editing process, however, took me longer than I would like to admit. Sorting and editing the piano part was not so difficult, but figuring out how to fill in the blanks that remained afterwards, learning how to use Spotify Soundtrap, and adding the extra effects to make it all tie together nicely was a lengthy and quite boring trial-and-error process.

Overall, making Nemor was a very fun and educational experience, that helped me really learn the ups and downs of (beginner) film-making by experiencing it myself, and I feel I have remained with more knowledge and ideas than I would have had by just reading a textbook. I am proud of myself and my team for our hard work and, while I see ways we can improve, I am happy with the final outcome.

Making Nemor was definitely an experience like no other.
