Genre is a way of categorising media texts. Media texts have conventions that they repeatedly use so that a test is easily recognisable as belonging to a particular genre. In my case, the musical genres Jazz and Punk. Genre hybridity enables producers to maximise their target audience by fusing conventions of different genres to appeal to a wider range of demographics. Over the years genre conventions used in media texts have become rather predictable, so genre hybridity is a common way to make a media text more unique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In this post, I will do some additional research on the genre, using the research done in the context of the preliminary work as a starting point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
From the preliminary genre post:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Jazz music videos strongly emphasize live performances, and are often shot in clubs, bars or small venues. There is also a focus on the instruments, rather than the people playing them. The lighting is low and moody, with vintage colour schemes and slow-paced editing. If a narrative is included, it’s often romantic or melancholic. Costumes lean towards formal wear.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Punk music videos also heavily focus on live band performance, often in small venues, garages or other DIY show locations such as basements. There is very high energy, with jumping, moshing and chaotic movement. The editing is fast-paced, with lots of jump cuts, and there is a very raw, unpolished feel. Anti-establishment and rebellious themes are often present; authority, politics, consumerism, conformity. The artists are often portrayed as outcasts or anti-heroes.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n While at first glance the Jazz and Punk genres don’t intersect, it’s interesting to observe their similarities; they both value improvisation, live, raw performances and small, intimate venues. However, a visual combination of the two genres would inadvertently lean towards the punk direction, especially in the costume and makeup department. So, it may not be accurate to call The Undecided Who Jazz-Punk, but rather Punk with Jazz motifs. But, in the end, I must admit, Jazz-Punk sounds cooler.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n The first band that described themselves as Punk-Jazz was called the Lounge Lizards, which mixed jazz with improvisational rock. Free jazz was an important influence in the American post-hardcore music scene of the early 90s. Time signatures and guitar melodies typical of the Free Jazz subgenre were mixed with hardcore screams and vocals, sometimes even incorporating jazz instruments such as the tuba. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Nowadays, there are many Punk-Jazz bands, and the genre does not follow any specific rules or guidelines, as it is based on the two most free and improvisational existing music genres.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Genre is a way of categorising media texts.
