Every tale begins with a location. Not merely a scene, but a place that animates with the people, molds their experiences and gives the fantastical a sense of realism. It’s not enough to simply pick a place to shoot, I had to find a space that enhances the mood of my project and increases the suspense that i tried to implement  in the story.

I needed a place that could be used for more than just a backdrop for my project. It needed to feel normal enough to be familiar to the real world yet separated enough to be unnerving. A location that might change suddenly from tumultuous to quie. A turning point occurs in the initial scene begin as a routine exercise lesson and turn into something completely different that Ben is unable to explain or avoid.

I thought of a few possibilities. Although it was excessively open, a sports base had the ideal athletic setting. The scene required a feeling of being caught in a moment that would not let go, or containment. With its wide area and natural light, the outdoor field was an additional option but it lacked the proper atmosphere. Thrillers usually  flourish in places that should feel regular, safe, and familiar and for that reason, I went with the school gym.

Why did i choose the gym?

A gym is made for loudness, movement, and maintaining order of the chaotic atmosphere. However, it transforms into something else in this sequel.

It sounds lively at first, with dodgeballs hitting the ground, sneakers shrieking, voices erupting in laughter and competition. Then it changes, everything changes abruptly when a ball hits Ben’s skull. The sound stretches unnaturally and warps. The earth sways. The formerly vibrant gym turns into an odd, reverberating emptiness. The gym is ideal since it begins as a safe, familiar space where nothing out of the ordinary should ever occur. And that’s what makes it so scary when it does all of a sudden.
